Engine torque is applied to a turbine portion of the torque converter through a fluid coupling assembly having a pump portion. The pump portion of the fluid coupling assembly is coupled through a mechanical drive connection to a torque converter input shaft. A stator portion of the torque converter is fixed relative to the transmission housing.
There are generally two types of torque converters, which include a lock-up torque converter or a direct drive torque converter. A lock-up torque converter may be equipped with a hydraulically actuated clutch which is used to mechanically connect the stator portion to the transmission housing to lock the stator portion fixed relative to the transmission housing to enable direct mechanical drive of the wheels. When the clutch is engaged, there is no mechanical shaft between the pump and the turbine. The turbine is mechanically connected to the pump. Therefore, as rotary energy is received by the pump from the turbine and applied to the stator portion of the lock-up torque converter, it is very difficult to measure the operational parameters of the lock-up torque converter, because the pump is directly connected to the turbine and other parts of the torque converter.
There are many factors that affect the operational parameters of the lock-up torque converter, including, but not limited to, the magnitude of torque applied to the turbine at a given point in time, the magnitude of rotary energy being applied to the pump, the magnitude of torque applied to the pump, the magnitude of rotary energy being applied to the stator
