I would like to make my game application change the state of the object based on the current state of the object. For instance, my object is a block and it has many states such as solid, unstuck, liquid, burned, and so on. If the user does not update the state of the object from the previous frame, then that could cause problems with collision detection. I have code that tells the object whether it is stuck or not and I have another piece of code that tells the object whether it is unstuck or liquid. The problem I have is that I don’t know how to identify the object’s prior state. The only way that I can see to do this is to save all the previous states and search for the desired state with a branching condition, but this seems extremely inefficient. Are there any other ways to identify an object’s prior state?
One way to do this is to use a stack. Every state has a unique ID, or a name, or something. Whenever you move to a new state, store it on the stack (or more likely have a separate stack for each state). Whenever you move back to a state that is saved, pop it from the stack. So if you were liquid and unstuck, you could save both (on separate stacks) and then whenever you are liquid and unstuck, you can just pop the liquid state and then unstuck state, remembering to clear the previous stack after that.
